Fantasy that may likely come true: Prometeus (experience is the new reality)

This video, at least on a technology level, syncs up very well with my own expectations: 5 minute Video on YouTube - well worth watching if you have not already seen it

Artificial Intelligence (AI) information assistant avatars, compelling Virtual Reality (VR) with haptics (*), and shared information will almost certainly be in our future (assuming that Bush or someone else does not start using nuclear weapons and destroy civilization).

I think that many of you would agree on this view of our future technology and how it will affect life and work. What is less clear to me is what our society will look like; I think that assuming our civilization lasts, we have 2 probable outcomes:
  • Novelist William Gibson's view of the future: governments are sidelined, corporations form the structure of economic and work life, "dog eat dog" meritocracy at all levels of society - this is the outcome I expect
  • A system like we have now, but where "competitive" governments compete for skilled workers and citizens by competing on low tax rates, public safety, fair and balanced arbitration between public and corporate interests - probably not going to happen, but this would be the best outcome
(*) haptics: force feedback on human/computer interfaces, sense of taste, smell, etc. I implemented a force feedback steering wheel for a VR racing simulator about 12 years ago: if you would drive the vehicle off of the racing track, you would feel the off road vibration differently than the on road steering wheel vibration; hit something and feel a realistic effect in the steering wheel. Coupled with good sound experiences with spatial effects (head related transfer function) this kind of thing is very compelling, or "suspension of disbelief" as it is known in the VR business.

    I watched the video. It's clearly playing off Philip K. Dick's short story: "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale (Total Recall)" This video paints a very bleak view of our future, where the media companies of the future can invade our very representations of reality to a far greater extent than they do today. If this is our future, then organized religion has a hell of a fight on its hands, as it tries to maintain its influence (or suspension of disbelief) on the mind of the Everyman.

    The first outcome - the one that you expect - would simply be called fascism, not such a good outcome considering past experiences with this form of government.

In Java-land, I have often used the pattern of writing a servlet with an init() method that starts up one or more background work threads. My Dad's work with Robert Oppenheimer and Edward Teller

Robert Oppenheimer and Edward Teller facilitated my Dad getting a professorship at UC Berkeley when I was 3 years old. Oppenheimer left Berkeley but Teller was a good friend of my father and I remember him being in our home. Three weeks ago, my wife and I were just leaving to see the new Oppenheimer movie when my Dad called. He mentioned that when I was in grade school he was invited to give a talk at Princeton. After his talk Oppenheimer talked with my Dad and invited him to have dinner at his house. My Dad said Oppenheimer was not well (I think he died of throat cancer soon afterwards) but his wife Kitty carried the conversation. My Dad, Ken Watson, passed away 10 days ago on August 18, 2023.

Time and Attention Fragmentation in Our Digital Lives

  As humans we have evolved over a few million years to be both attentive and reactive to danger, live in social communities, and spend much of our time being in the present moment gathering and eating food and socializing. The behavior of rapidly changing short attention to content on social media, too many good short form things to watch on streaming video entertainment platforms, are all rewiring our brains in an unnatural and unhealthy way. I fight back, but in really simple ways that entail little ceremony: Almost every morning I spend 30 minutes scanning Hacker News (about 10 minutes), Apple News (about 5 minutes), and the remaining time on Twitter and Mastodon finding interesting new (mostly tech) things.
